Alex Cabagnot, one of the PBA’s finest guards ever, isn’t calling it quits just yet on his playing career despite reports of him supposedly hanging up his jersey.
“Not retired yet,” Cabagnot wrote on X. “I’d like to own that narrative.”
Local sports media outlets reported earlier that the nine-time PBA champion had retired. This after the Converge FiberXers, Cabagnot’s former team, posted on social media a photo thanking the lefty point guard with a caption that alluded to him “may be hanging up the jersey.”
“Thank you, Cabaggie. You may be hanging up the jersey, but your legacy remains both in the Converge FiberXers and in the PBA. Thank you, Alex Cabagnot,” said Converge in posts on Facebook and Instagram.
Said caption has since been edited after Cabagnot’s “not retired yet” tweet.
It now reads, “THANK YOU, CABAGGIE. Your legacy remains in the #ConvergeFiberXers. Thank you, Alex Cabagnot!”

Evidently, according to sources, Cabagnot’s contract had simply expired.
Coaching Stint in the Works for Alex Cabagnot as Hoops Career Continues
The 42-year-old former standout of Hawaii-Hilo will reportedly join the coaching staff of the UE Red Warriors. According to reports, he will be one of the assistant coaches of newly hired UE coach Chris Gavina.
Cabagnot’s impending UE coaching will be his third on the sidelines, having previously served as a skills coach of the UP Fighting Maroons from 2016 to 2019 and as an assistant for the Bacolod City of Smiles in the MPBL last year.
While Cabagnot dispelled talks of retirement, there’s no word yet on where he will be playing next, assuming he does. But judging by his latest stint with Converge, it appears former second overall pick of the 2005 PBA Draft still has some juice left. In 14 games with the FiberXers in the PBA Governors’ Cup, Cabagnot averaged 4.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists and was instrumental in Converge nearly beating the San Miguel Beermen in the quarters.
Wherever he takes his act next, expect fully well that Alex Cabagnot will be in charge of the narrative.
