It was a busy Tuesday in the NBA with 11 games on tap, and the action was definitely fast and furious. Among the highlights was another 50-point game, some more history made, and a young backcourt showing it is the future of the franchise.
Lauri Markkanen Drops 51 as Jazz Deal Suns Another Loss
Lauri Markkanen dropped the third 50-point game of this young season on Tuesday, firing 51 in the Utah Jazz’s (2-1) 138-134 overtime win over the Phoenix Suns (1-3) at Delta Center.
Markkanen was 14-for-32 from the field and a perfect 17-for-17 from the charity stripe in the franchise’s first 50-point game since Karl Malone way back in 1998. Keyonte George added 26 points and 10 assists, while Walker Kessler continued his strong start to the season with a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Devin Booker top-scored for the Suns with 34, followed by 25 from Mark Williams and 23 from Grayson Allen.
Nikola Jokic Leads Nuggets Past Wolves
The Denver Nuggets (2-1) roared past the Minnesota Timberwolves (2-2) on Tuesday at Target Center with Nikola Jokic leading the way to a 127-114 triumph.
Jokic, the three-time MVP, had 25 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists for his third straight triple-double to start the season. With that stat line, Jokic became only the third NBA player to start a season with three straight triple-doubles, following Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Russell Westbrook (2020-2021). Impressively, with Jokic also going 9-for-10 from the field, he became only the second player behind Wilt Chamberlain to post at least 25-15-10 while shooting 90%.
Jamal Murray led the Nuggets’ attack with 43 points on five triples, while Tim Hardaway Jr. came off the bench to score 20. Jaden McDaniels and Julius Randle had 25 and 24, respectively, for the Wolves, who were without the injured Anthony Edwards.
Sixers Overcome Magic Behind Deadly Backcourt
VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey are starting to be a problem for other teams. On Monday, the backcourt duo combined for 69 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers (3-0) to a 136-124 victory over the struggling Orlando Magic (1-3).
Maxey led the way with 43 points, his second 40-piece of the season, while Edgecombe added 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists. Kelly Oubre Jr. continued showing out as well with 25 markers, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.
Paolo Banchero fired 32 points for the Magic to go along with his 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Desmond Bane, acquired in the offseason, chipped in 24, while Franz Wagner had 22.
