The NBA on Wednesday offered up a modest five-game slate that saw two undefeated teams continue to be unbeaten (Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder) and a contender notching back-to-back wins after an early-season loss.
Sixers Overcome Wizards as Tyrese Maxey Continues Torrid Start
Tyrese Maxey had 39 points and 10 assists on Wednesday to lead the Philadelphia 76ers (4-0) to a 139-134 comeback win over the Washington Wizards (1-3) at Capital One Arena.
Maxey’s 39 brings his point total to 150, making him just the second player in NBA history after Russell Westbrook in 2016-17 to record 150+ points and 30+ assists through the first four games of a season. Maxey also had plenty of help in this one, though, with Joel Embiid putting up 25 points, Quentin Grimes adding 23 off the bench, and Kelly Oubre Jr. and VJ Edgecombe contributing 17 and 14, respectively.
Sophomore big Alex Sarr led the Wizards with 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists, with Kyshawn George adding 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 dimes.
Warriors Clamp Down on Clippers for Fourth Win
The Golden State Warriors (4-1), known most of the time for their prolific offense, put on a defensive show of force in notching a 98-79 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers (2-2) at Oracle Arena.
Golden State held the Clippers, who were shooting a league-best 52.5%, to just 36.6% shooting and kept James Harden scoreless the entire second half. Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry took care of the scoring, contributing 21 and 19, respectively.
Harden finished with 20 points, all in the first half, while Kawhi Leonard had 18.
Bucks Hold Off Knicks Behind Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo showed out in leading the Milwaukee Bucks (3-1) to a 121-111 triumph over the New York Knicks (2-2) at Madison Square Garden.
Antetokounmpo, who supposedly would like to play for the Knicks if the season goes south for Milwaukee, fired a game-high 37 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Ryan Hollins backed him up with 25 points on 4-for-4 shooting from deep.
Jalen Brunson led the way for the Knicks with 36, while Mikal Bridges had 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. Karl-Anthony Towns, however, was held to just 8 points on 2-for-12 shooting.
