Thursday’s NBA slate featured nine games, including a marquee showdown between the league’s hottest team, Detroit Pistons, and the up-and-down Boston Celtics. The Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder also staked their winning run against the Milwaukee Bucks and Minnesota Timberwolves, while the Golden State Warriors took on the Houston Rockets.
Celtics Survive Pistons, End League-Best 13-Game Run
Jaylen Brown and Derrick White powered the Boston Celtics (10-8) to a 117-114 win over the Detroit Pistons (15-3) at TD Garden.
Brown finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, while White fired 11 of his 27 in the final five minutes to help the Celtics put an end to Detroit’s 13-game winning streak. Payton Pritchard added 16, while Baylor Scheierman chipped in 13 off the bench.
Cade Cunningham paced the Pistons with 42 points and 8 rebounds but missed the third and potentially game-tying free throw of three in the dying seconds, allowing the Celtics to escape with the win. Jalen Duren added 12 points and 16 boards.
Heat Overcome Bucks for Sixth Win in a Row
Tyler Herro picked up from where he left off in his debut the other day as he led the Miami Heat (13-6) to a 106-103 escape act over the Milwaukee Bucks (8-11) at Kaseya Center.
Herro put up 29 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists in just 29 minutes, while Bam Adebayo chipped in 17 and 11. Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell and Kel’el Ware added 11 apiece.
Ryan Rollins and Myles Turner led the way for the Bucks with 26 and 24, respectively. Milwaukee was again without superstar MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Thunder Outlast Wolves in Rematch of Last Season’s Western Conference Finals
Tested for once, the Oklahoma City Thunder (18-1) responded like champs, pulling out a hard-fought 113-105 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves (10-8) at Paycom Center.
Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a game-high 40 points on top of 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals to lead the Thunder, who fended off the Wolves repeatedly after a strong start. Isaiah Hartenstein added 15 points and 7 boards, Chet Holmgren put up 12 points and 9 boards, and Ajay Mitchell chipped in 13 markers off the bench.
Anthony Edwards paced the Wolves with 31 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, followed by 18 markers off the bench from Terrence Shannon Jr. Donte DiVincenzo added 11, and Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels had 10 each.
Rockets Eke Out Win vs. Warriors Behind Reed Sheppard
Reed Sheppard poured in a career-high 31 points and hit the game-sealing freebies to tow the Houston Rockets (12-4) to a thrilling 104-100 triumph over the Golden State Warriors (10-10) at Chase Center.
Sheppard added 9 boards and 5 dimes in what is arguably his best game in the NBA so far. Alperen Sengun backed up Sheppard with 16 points, 6 boards and 6 assists, while Jabari Smith Jr. had 15. The Rockets were actually trailing the Warriors by two going into the fourth but outscored the home team 30-24 in the final 12 minutes to secure the win.
Jimmy Butler paced the Dubs with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, while Will Richard added 18 to continue what has been a fine rookie season. Steph Curry, though, was held to 14 markers on 4-for-13 from the field. He also had 7 of the Warriors’ 16 turnovers.
