Germany’s Tatjana Maria crashed out of the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open on Wednesday after losing to Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova, 7-6, 6-4, in Round of 16 action.

Tatjana Maria Speaks Highly of the Competition

Maria’s loss, in a roundabout way, proved an earlier point she made after she beat France’s Leolia Jeanjean, 7-6, 6-4, in the Round of 32: the competition in the Philippine Women’s Open is legit.

“At the end of the day, we are all good players,” Maria said after her winning debut in the Philippines. “It’s really about the mental sometimes… you have to keep fighting for your point….”

Maria, who was the No. 1 seed of the tournament, later doubled down on her initial comment about the quality of players competing in the Philippine Women’s Open.

“You know, I think it’s really high, the level is super high. We are all good players here. I mean, I’m the number one seed, but that doesn’t mean anything. Everybody plays really well, and like what you saw today, every day is a fight and every match is a fight.”

Some Good Players Came to the Country

Ranked No. 42 in the WTA, Tatjana Maria was among the elite talent that came to the country for the Philippine Women’s Open—and one of eight players in the Top 100.

Other Top 100 players in the tournament are Alex Eala (No. 49), Solana Sierra (No. 63), Donna Vekić (No. 72), Camila Osorio (No. 84), Lulu Sun (No. 86), Simona Waltert (No. 87), and Darja Semenistaja (No. 98).

Of these eight, Sierra, Vekić, Osorio, and Eala are all through to the quarterfinals, setting up what could potentially be an explosive conclusion to the Philippine Women’s Open. That underscores Maria’s earlier point, which she said is a treat to Filipino fans.

“You have so many good players here to watch for the fans. It’s really nice for them to see all these kinds of players, especially it’s the first time for them to have a tournament here in the Philippines,” Maria pointed out on Monday. “I think they can be really happy that the field is super strong and all these players are here. It’s really nice for them.”

Indeed, the field in the Philippine Women’s Open has delivered top-notch tennis, and it looks like fans are enjoying the action.
