Alex Eala is through to the Round of 16 in the BNP Paribas Open after winning her Round of 32 match against world No. 4 Coco Gauff. It was, however, an anticlimactic victory as the American had to retire due to a left arm injury, giving Eala the 6-2, 2-0 triumph.

The match began with both players finding it difficult to settle into a rhythm on serve. Gauff initially grabbed the advantage with an early break, but Eala quickly responded to level the opening set at 1-1.

The momentum shifted midway through the set as the 20-year-old Filipina began to dictate play. The world No. 32 held serve to move ahead 3-2 before capitalizing on a series of mistakes from Gauff, who struggled with her serve and committed several double faults.

Using well-placed drop shots and confident net play, Eala kept the American off-balance and extended her lead to 4-2. With the score at 5-2, Gauff called for a medical timeout as trainers attended to her left arm.

Despite receiving treatment and heavy taping on her forearm during the break, the American returned to the court still hampered. Eala quickly broke serve again to seal the first set, 6-2.

Left Arm Injury Forces Coco Gauff to Retire

Carrying her momentum into the second frame, Alex Eala held serve to open the set before breaking Gauff once more to move ahead 2-0.

The 21-year-old American’s physical issues proved too difficult to overcome. After dropping the second game, Gauff walked to the net and informed Eala that she could not continue, ending the match prematurely.

The injury-plagued outing saw Gauff commit numerous errors and struggle throughout the contest. It also marked only the second time in her professional career that she has retired mid-match.

The match lasted 54 minutes at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California, marking the Filipina’s first-ever appearance in the tournament’s fourth round.

Alex Eala Moves to Round of 16 vs. Linda Noskova

For Alex Eala, the victory served as a measure of redemption after her straight-sets defeat to Gauff at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships last month.

It also marked her fourth career win over a top-10 player after victories over Jasmine Paolini, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek.

Eala will next face 14th seed Linda Noskova on March 11 for a place in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, with the time still to be determined.

The Czech advanced after rallying past Sorana Cirstea, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
