Alex Eala is on to the Round of 16 of the Miami Open after beating Magda Linette, 6-3, 7-6(2), in Round of 32 action on Sunday morning. The win is an excellent follow-up after Eala got her Miami Open off to a rousing start with a win over Laura Siegemund.
Eala quickly settled into a rhythm early in the match, dictating rallies with solid groundstrokes and aggressive returns. Her ability to attack Linette’s second serve proved crucial, allowing the Filipina to generate several scoring opportunities.
After breaking serve midway through the set, Eala maintained her composure and capitalized on her opponent’s errors to pull ahead, 5-3. She then held serve to seal the opening frame in just 40 minutes, showcasing her comfort on the Miami hard courts.
Magda Linette Fights Back in Second Set
The second set proved far more competitive as the world No. 50 regrouped and began applying pressure.
The No. 29 Pinay initially looked poised for another comfortable set after breaking early and building a 2-0 lead. However, the Polish veteran gradually found her rhythm and forced longer rallies. Linette erased the deficit and eventually grabbed a 4-3 advantage, putting the Rafael Nadal alum under pressure.
The 20-year-old refused to back down, responding each time her 34-year-old foe edged ahead. Linette battled through tense service games and repeatedly leveled the score, eventually pushing the set into a decisive tiebreak after the pair remained deadlocked at 6-6.
