Tim Cone Confirms Jayson David Tore ACL: Why It’s a Big Deal and What Ginebra Can Do

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and torn ACLs have become synonymous, it seems. That’s after rising star Jayson David was officially ruled out of PBA Season 50 with a torn left ACL following his scary noncontact fall in Ginebra’s opening-day win over the Macau Black Knights.

“Yes, we just got word today (Friday) that Jayson just had an ACL,” said Tim Cone after Ginebra’s loss to the NLEX Road Warriors on Friday. “I think in two weeks, he’ll be immobilized and then he’s going to have surgery.”

In any other season, losing Jayson David for an entire season likely wouldn’t be a big deal. But this isn’t like any other season. This has been the 29-year-old’s breakout, as he had quietly become one of Ginebra’s most reliable rotation pieces. The timing couldn’t be worse. Fresh off signing a two-year extension, David was finally settling into a defined role under head coach Tim Cone and was no longer just a fringe option, but a dependable source of energy and versatility off the bench.

Why Losing Jayson David Is a Big Deal

Put simply, Jayson David’s absence leaves more than just a gap in the stat sheet.

David built his value on defense. He was the kind of guard who made life difficult for opposing ball handlers. He’s scrappy, relentless, and always active. That “pest” identity gave Ginebra a layer of perimeter resistance that doesn’t easily translate to box score numbers. He bought time for the team’s primary creators, took on tough assignments, and kept the defensive pressure consistent. That he’s 6-foot-3 and a superb athlete only emphasizes that defensive ability.

Now, that layer is gone. And Ginebra’s loss to the NLEX Road Warriors just showed how important David is to the Barangay. Without David, Ginebra had no one else other than Scottie Thompson to put on NLEX’s talented guards, starting with Robert Bolick, who exploded for 32 big points. Even Schonny Winston, a 6-foot-4 wing, got his way, firing 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting without a defensive stalwart checking him for much of the game.

Offensively, David has developed into a slasher with a decent outside game—good enough that defenses need to respect his long ball. What’s more, his athleticism makes him a weapon in transition and the type of finisher that blends perfectly with Scottie Thompson and RJ Abarrientos in the open court. That’s all gone now, at least for the foreseeable future.

How Can Ginebra Compensate

The challenge now for Ginebra is to recalibrate on the fly with Jayson David out for Season 50. That means bigger roles for Thompson and Abarrientos, who will have to take on the challenge of being point-of-attack defenders while also handling playmaking duties. Having Justin Brownlee in the fold helps, for sure, as he’ll likely take on defensive assignments at the point of attack anyway. Defensively, Brownlee brings the kind of smarts that can direct a team defense without one of its chief stoppers.

Tim Cone might also have to rely even more on his reserves, including veteran Nards Pinto and rookies Sonny Estil and John Abis. Estil, in particular, could find himself back in the rotation after earning Cone’s praise at least twice last conference for his energy and defense. Abis, who’s 6-foot-3 like David and Estil, might get his chance as well, and if his stint in the NCAA for Perpetual is any indication, he could prove to be a pleasant surprise for the Barangay.

Then again, the truth of the matter is, Jayson David is way ahead of Estil and Abis and brings an altogether different dynamic that Pinto probably can’t provide. Needless to say, his prolonged absence will create a ripple effect that could undermine Ginebra’s chances at winning a title—that is, until Cone figures out a way again or Brownlee has some more magic left.
