It turns out, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was right all along—at least about The Sphere in Las Vegas as the venue for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao (May-Pac II) rematch.
Money May, who is currently in the crosshairs of the IRS in the US, said back in March that The Sphere hadn’t been confirmed just yet as the venue of May-Pac II. He also claimed that the rematch wouldn’t be an actual fight but rather an exhibition, which ran counter to the original announcement by Netflix, which stated that the bout would be a professional prizefight that would count on the fighters’ records.
Pacquiao, for his part, has vehemently countered Mayweather’s claims, insisting that the fight will actually mean something.
May-Pac II Might Not Be Held at The Sphere After All
Now, it can be told: The Sphere won’t be hosting Mayweather vs. Pacquiao—at least not on the original schedule of the fight, which is September 19 (September 20 in the Philippines). This after legendary band The Eagles confirmed a September 19 show at the iconic venue as part of their residency.
It is now unclear if the fight will push through as originally scheduled but in a different venue, or if it will be rescheduled so it can take place in The Sphere.
May-Pac II to Be Sealed, Says Floyd Mayweather Jr.
While May-Pac II may have location issues at the moment, fans should at least be encouraged by Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently saying that the fight is near the finish line.
“We’re almost on the finish line to finish the Pacquiao fight…Eventually within the next 48 hours the Pacquiao fight should be done,” said Mayweather during the press conference for his exhibition fight with Greek martial artist Mike Zambidis on Friday.
So, yes, May-Pac II might just be finalized sooner rather than later, and that would certainly be a step in the right direction—at least for those who actually want to see two nearly 50-year-olds fighting again.
