2026 FIFA World Cup Group D Preview: No Clear Favorite in the Group of Fine Margins

Group D may be one of the most difficult groups to predict in the tournament. Unlike many groups that feature a clear heavyweight, all four teams enter with realistic hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Host nation United States appears to hold a slight edge thanks to home support and familiarity with the conditions, while Türkiye enters as one of Europe’s most intriguing returning sides. Australia’s consistency on the World Cup stage and Paraguay’s defensive discipline only add to the uncertainty, making Group D one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.

United States

The United States enters the tournament carrying the expectations that come with hosting a World Cup. Led by Christian Pulisic and one of the most talented generations in program history, the Americans have steadily grown into a regular presence on the international stage.

The U.S. relies on aggressive pressing, quick transitions, and athleticism across the pitch. Home support and familiarity with the environment could provide a valuable advantage, but expectations will also be higher than ever as the Americans seek to improve on their Round of 16 finish in 2022.

Türkiye

Türkiye returns to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when it stunned the football world with a third-place finish. The team remains known for its intensity, physicality, and willingness to play at a fast pace, often turning matches into chaotic battles that disrupt opponents’ rhythm.

Led by captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu and exciting young talents Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız, Türkiye combines experience with emerging star power. If the team can improve its defensive consistency, it could become one of the most dangerous sides in the group.

Australia

Australia continues to be one of the most reliable World Cup participants outside the traditional football powers, qualifying for six consecutive tournaments. The Socceroos keep things simple, relying on direct play, aerial battles, and physical strength rather than elaborate build-up play.

While the squad lacks the technical quality of some group rivals, Australia’s experience and disciplined approach have repeatedly helped it outperform expectations on the World Cup stage.

Paraguay

Paraguay returns to the World Cup after a 16-year absence, hoping to revive memories of its historic quarterfinal run in 2010. Built around defensive organization and compact defending, the South Americans remain one of the most difficult teams in the group to break down.

Veteran leaders such as Miguel Almirón and Gustavo Gómez continue to form the backbone of the squad, bringing valuable experience but also raising questions about the team’s long-term pace and athleticism. Paraguay may not score many goals, but its defensive discipline makes it a dangerous opponent in tournament football.

Who Advances?

While the United States and Türkiye are widely viewed as the favorites, they will not meet until the final round of group-stage matches. That could leave plenty of room for the standings to shift before the group’s marquee showdown.

Paraguay, in particular, could play a decisive role. A draw — or even a narrow victory — against the United States in the opening match would immediately increase the pressure on the hosts and reshape the qualification race before the tournament reaches its final week.

Projected Finish

  1. United States
  2. Türkiye
  3. Australia
  4. Paraguay
