Elise Mertens sent Alex Eala packing to an early exit at the Bad Homburg Open with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on early Tuesday morning.
Fresh off a breakthrough semifinal finish at the Berlin Open just two days earlier, Eala entered the tournament carrying momentum and confidence. However, the demanding stretch of matches appeared to finally catch up with the 21-year-old as veteran experience prevailed on Centre Court.
Mertens Erases 3-1 Deficit to Take the Opening Set
Eala started brightly and looked poised for another strong showing on grass. The Filipina world No. 30 broke Mertens early and surged to a promising 3-1 lead in the opening set, using her improved serve and aggressive baseline play to pressure the Belgian.
But from that point on, momentum completely shifted. Mertens, the world No. 26, settled into the match with composed shot-making and consistent serving. The Belgian quickly erased the deficit, capitalizing on Eala’s struggling forehand and rising unforced errors to reel off five consecutive games and steal the opening set.
Eala’s Comeback Falls Short
The veteran carried that momentum straight into the second frame.
Mertens dominated the early stretch of the set, winning eight straight games overall dating back to the first set and racing to a commanding 3-0 advantage. Her steady serve and clean ball-striking constantly forced Eala onto the defensive, preventing the Filipina from finding any sustained rhythm.
Despite the uphill climb, Eala still showed flashes of resistance. The Filipina managed to halt the bleeding with a pair of strong holds and even saved two match points late in the contest. She produced a few trademark winners, including a clever drop shot and an ace, but Mertens’ experience ultimately proved too much to overcome.
Serving for the match at 5-3, the Belgian closed the door comfortably to complete the victory in one hour and 24 minutes.
Eala Now 0-3 Against Mertens, Focuses on Doubles
The defeat marked Alex Eala’s third straight loss to Mertens, who also defeated the Filipina in Tunisia in 2023 and at the Mutua Madrid Open earlier this season.
Her campaign in Bad Homburg is not over just yet, however, as she remains in the doubles draw alongside tennis legend Venus Williams.
The duo of Eala-Williams will take on the pairing of Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison in the main draw of Bad Homburg doubles.
