How Does the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 Work?

The Round of 32 is the first knockout round of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.

There are 32 teams in this stage. The winner of each match advances to the Round of 16, while the losing team is eliminated from the tournament.

If a match is tied after 90 minutes, extra time will be played. If the score remains tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout.

Canada vs South Africa
Canada became the first team to advance to the Round of 16 after beating South Africa, 1-0, in the opening Round of 32 match.
South Africa’s World Cup run ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow defeat to Canada.

Brazil vs Japan
Brazil advanced to the Round of 16 after coming from behind to beat Japan, 2-1. Japan exited the tournament after a strong Round of 32 performance.

Germany vs Paraguay
Paraguay stunned Germany by winning 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Germany was eliminated in the Round of 32.

Netherlands vs Morocco
Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, booking a Round of 16 meeting with Canada. The Netherlands was eliminated after the shootout loss.

Ivory Coast vs Norway
Norway secured an emotional 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast to advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in their history.

France vs Sweden
France sent a resounding statement to the rest of the tournament with a dominant 3-0 win over Sweden. Kylian Mbappé starred with a brilliant brace. France safely moves on to meet Paraguay in the next round.

Mexico vs Ecuador
Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at the Mexico City Stadium, Mexico comfortably defeated Ecuador 2-0.

England vs DR Congo
England survived a tough, physical encounter against DR Congo, grinding out a 2-1 victory. The Three Lions did just enough to avoid an upset and punch their ticket to meet Mexico.

Belgium vs Senegal
In an absolute classic that required extra time, Belgium edged out an incredibly resilient Senegal side 3-2. The Red Devils held their nerve late in the game to set up a date with the host nation, USA.

United States vs Bosnia and Herzegovina
The United States men’s national soccer team, feeding on home turf energy, comfortably handled Bosnia and Herzegovina with a clean 2-0 win. Balogun picked up a second-half red card.

Spain vs Austria
Spain delivered one of the cleaner performances of the Round of 32, beating Austria 3-0 to move into the Round of 16.

Portugal vs Croatia
Portugal survived a tighter knockout test against Croatia, earning a 2-1 win to keep its World Cup run alive. Croatia pushed the match close, but Portugal found enough in the decisive moments to advance.

Switzerland vs Algeria
Switzerland handled its Round of 32 assignment with a professional 2-0 win over Algeria. The result sent Switzerland into the Round of 16, while Algeria exited after being held scoreless in the knockout round.

Australia vs Egypt
Egypt kept its World Cup run alive after outlasting Australia in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. The Socceroos pushed the match deep, but Egypt held its nerve from the spot to move into the Round of 16.

Argentina vs Cabo Verde
Argentina survived one of the most dramatic tests of the Round of 32, beating Cabo Verde 3-2 after extra time. The defending champion was made to work until the end, while Cabo Verde exited after a fearless knockout-stage performance.

Colombia vs Ghana
Colombia completed the Round of 32 picture with a tight 1-0 win over Ghana. Jhon Arias delivered the decisive goal, sending Colombia into a Round of 16 meeting with Switzerland.

More teams will join the Round of 16 as the Round of 32 continues.
