Alex Eala delivered an impressive performance to begin her 2026 Wimbledon campaign, defeating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the second round for the first time in her career.
The match carried added weight for Eala. After teaming up with Zarazua in doubles at the 2025 Roland Garros, the two now faced each other on the grass courts of Wimbledon. Eala also sought redemption, having lost to Zarazua at the 2024 ITF Cary Tennis Classic.
Eala Takes Control After Tight Opening
Both players opened with comfortable service holds before Eala began dictating the pace from the baseline.
Using aggressive groundstrokes and strong court coverage, the Filipina broke Zarazua’s serve to move ahead 3-1 and never allowed her opponent to settle into rhythm.
One of the toughest stretches of the opening set came in the sixth game, where Eala squandered an early 40-0 advantage and was forced into a grueling battle that featured seven deuces. Despite the resistance, she stayed patient during extended rallies and finally secured the crucial break after an unforced error from the 28-year-old Mexican.
That breakthrough completely shifted momentum in favor of the 21-year-old Eala. She confidently held serve to complete a dominant first set, winning five consecutive games for a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Relentless Pressure Seals Straight-Sets Win
The world No. 32 carried her momentum into the second set, immediately breaking serve to establish a quick 2-0 lead.
Although the world No. 75 managed to get on the scoreboard, Eala remained firmly in control by repeatedly neutralizing Zarazua’s first serve and taking charge of rallies early.
Eala pieced together another dominant run, capturing three straight games to stretch the lead to 5-1. Zarazua briefly delayed the finish with a love hold, but Eala quickly closed the door in the following game.
Showing no signs of nerves, Eala sealed the victory with a powerful forehand winner after one hour and 18 minutes of action.
Another Rematch Awaits in Wimbledon Run
The triumph improved Eala’s grass-court record this season and pushed her into the Round of 64 for the first time at Wimbledon.
It marked only the second Grand Slam singles victory for the Quezon City native, following her breakthrough run at the 2025 US Open.
It also underscored the rapid rise of the young Filipina, who has become the first player from the Philippines to earn a Grand Slam singles seed at No. 29.
Awaiting in the second round is Australia’s Maya Joint, whom the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate previously faced in the 2025 Eastbourne Open final—a tightly contested three-set battle. With a place in the Wimbledon third round at stake, another high-level showdown is expected between the rising stars.
