Alex Eala’s dream campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships came to a valiant end after the Filipina bowed to former finalist Jasmine Paolini of Italy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in a gripping fourth-round battle on Monday evening.
Paolini, who suffered a straight-set loss to Eala at the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this season, earned her revenge and tied their head-to-head record at one win apiece while advancing to the quarterfinals of the grass-court Grand Slam.
Paolini Banks on Baseline Plays to Take the Opening Set
After stunning defending champion Iga Świątek in the previous round, Eala entered the match full of confidence, but the experienced Italian quickly imposed her aggressive baseline game in the opening set.
Paolini secured the first break in the fourth game and rode the momentum to a 4-1 advantage, consistently targeting Eala’s second serve while dictating rallies with powerful groundstrokes.
Although the Filipina fought back by breaking serve to narrow the gap to 5-4, Paolini answered immediately with another break to wrap up the opening set.
Alex Eala Battles Back to Force a Decider
Refusing to let her historic run end quietly, Alex Eala responded with renewed aggression in the second set.
After missing several early break opportunities, the 21-year-old finally converted to move ahead 2-1 before the 30-year-old quickly leveled the score. The two traded strong service games until Eala produced another timely break to grab a 4-3 edge.
One of the defining moments of the match came in the eighth game, when Eala erased a daunting 0-40 deficit on her serve by winning five consecutive points to preserve her advantage. She remained composed in the closing stages, serving out the set to force a deciding third set and ignite the Centre Court crowd.
Paolini Pulls Away in Set 3
The deciding set lived up to expectations, with both players holding serve through the opening seven games in a tightly contested battle.
The turning point arrived in the eighth game when Paolini capitalized on a costly Eala double fault and several untimely errors to earn the decisive service break for a 5-3 lead.
The Italian then calmly served out the match to complete the two-hour-plus victory and book her place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Although Eala fell one win short of reaching the last eight, her campaign will be remembered as the greatest Grand Slam run by a Filipino player in the Open Era.
A Memorable and Historic Wimbledon for Alex Eala
After suffering an opening-round exit last year, the Quezon City native made sure to make this tournament as memorable as possible.
Eala defeated Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa in the opening round, rallied past Australia’s Maya Joint to reach the third round, and produced the biggest victory of her career by dethroning defending champion Iga Świątek before eventually bowing out against the experienced Paolini.
Despite the defeat, Eala walked away with the best Grand Slam result of her young career, becoming the first Filipino player in the Open Era to reach the Round of 16 at Wimbledon and extending a breakthrough tournament that further cemented her status as one of tennis’ brightest rising stars.
