Alex Eala: Obligation to Win Comes From Competitive Fire—But Fans Welcome to ‘Go Along on This Journey’

It is no secret Alex Eala is a rising superstar in the world of tennis. Her matches are attractions, and crowds gather in droves nearly every time she plays.

And, on Thursday morning, after authoring another thrilling come-from-behind victory—this time a 6-2, 7-6(1) win over Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16 of the Mubadala DC Open—Eala admitted, in her own way, that with great fanfare comes great pressure to win.

Eala Has an Obligation to Herself First

While Eala acknowledged there is pressure to deliver for her fans, she stressed that the obligation does not necessarily come from them but from herself first.

“There’s definitely pressure,” Eala said in her postmatch interview with Tennis Channel when asked if she feels an obligation to deliver for her fans. “I mean, I’m a competitive athlete, so there’s pressure. But I think the obligation also comes to myself. I’m a very self-demanding person. I’m a very ambitious person.”

In other words, the 21-year-old Filipina is a fiercely competitive athlete—and that competitiveness is fueling her rise to heights no Filipino has ever reached in tennis.

Come Along for the Journey

That inner drive is personal for Eala, but she is beyond grateful for the support she has been receiving from fans all around the world. In fact, she is inviting everyone to come along and be part of her athletic journey.

“I’m definitely happy and welcoming to everyone who wants to support me as well and go along on this journey,” she added.

So far, this ambition-driven journey has been exhilarating—marked by memorable wins, heartbreaking losses, and a fanbase that has given Eala both support and admiration.

And this journey might just be getting started.
