Alex Eala is yet again facing another tough challenge as she is set to take on another Top 10 WTA player, Amanda Anisimova, in the Round of 32 of the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open.
After her abrupt victory against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, in which the Romanian was forced to retire due to a right foot injury, the pride of the Philippines advanced to the Round of 32 of the tournament.
Anisimova, a Former World No. 3 Earlier This Year
American Amanda Anisimova reached a career-best ranking last January after climbing to world No. 3.
That being said, despite falling to No. 10 now, the accomplishments of the 24-year-old are still undoubtedly impressive.
Her best finish in a tournament this year was a semifinal appearance, where she lost a tough battle against Jessica Pegula at the Dubai Tennis Championships. At the Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinals, while at the other two Grand Slam tournaments, the French Open and Wimbledon, she reached the third round.
Anisimova’s previous tournament was the National Bank Open, where, very similarly to her upcoming opponent Eala, she also reached the Round of 16.
This year, the four-time WTA champion has posted a 17-10 win-loss record in singles.
Another WTA Top 10 Upset Win Waiting for Eala?
It is fair and reasonable for Alex Eala’s fans to expect another upset victory against a WTA Top 10 player, as the 21-year-old Filipina has defeated five former or current Top 10 players since last year.
In 2025, the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate defeated Iga Świątek, Elena Rybakina, Madison Keys, and Jelena Ostapenko. This season, the two-time WTA champion also came out victorious against Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini.
The world No. 20 is most certainly aware of what must be done to defy the odds and accomplish another difficult task. With Eala facing yet another formidable opponent, her Filipino supporters will surely be cheering her on throughout the match.
