Coach Jimmy Alapag Secures His Star Player
Becoming a first‑time head coach comes with plenty of expectations, especially for someone who previously worked on the coaching staff of the Sacramento Kings in the NBA. For Alapag, returning to the PBA as a head coach is exciting enough—but securing his best player for the next few years makes the challenge even more rewarding.
Despite the emergence of Schonny Winston and the continuing rise of reliable role players such as Ljay Gonzales and JP Bahio, Bolick is still the undisputed cornerstone of NLEX. For a PBA legend like Alapag, having Bolick committed long‑term is a welcome development as he looks to establish himself as a coaching powerhouse in the local scene.
More Than Just a Scorer: Bolick’s Evolution in NLEX
Bolick first made his mark as a pure scorer with the NorthPort Batang Pier, now the Titan Ultra Giant Risers. Since joining NLEX, however, the third overall pick of the 2018 draft has grown into a more complete player.
The 30‑year‑old point guard is averaging 17.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.6 assists in the current PBA Governors’ Cup. Over the last three years since being traded to NLEX in December 2023, Bolick’s development has been commendable. He has shifted from a shoot-first gunner to a more balanced, team‑oriented playmaker.
Next Stop: Playoff Success
While a terrific player, Bolick has never found success in the games that matter most, as his teams have been either eliminated from playoff contention early or stopped in the quarterfinals. In the recent Commissioner’s Cup, in fact, NLEX finished as the No. 1 seed with a 10‑2 record, only to lose in twice-to-beat fashion to the TNT Tropang 5G as Bolick failed to raise his level in the quarterfinals.
Of course, that inability to make deep postseason runs isn’t entirely Bolick’s fault. For all of Berto’s singular brilliance, he’s never had the benefit of a stellar, championship-caliber roster around him, and that’s allowed opposing teams to key in on him come playoff time. That being the case, there’s still no denying that Bolick is one of the league’s very best players.
Looking Ahead
Bolick’s extension gives NLEX stability and Alapag a leader that he can rely on as he looks to transform the Road Warriors into legitimate championship contenders. With Berto back for the long haul, The Captain will have a steadying force that will guide the talented guard pair of Winston and Gonzales—and potentially turn them into championship cornerstones as well.
Bigger picture, resigning Bolick shows NLEX is serious not only about its present and its future and that it will do whatever it takes to build a winner. In short, it’s a move that also establishes crediibility, and it could help accelerate the Road Warriors’ ascent into elite status.
