Aiming for Perfection: Dwight Ramos, Gilas Pilipinas Shoot for Perfect Second Round in Qualifiers

Dwight Ramos and his Gilas Pilipinas teammates understand the assignment: They need to be perfect in the second round of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. This round will see the national team carry over their 2‑4 record into Group E, where they will face Iran (5‑1), Jordan (5‑1), and Syria (2‑4). Unbeaten Australia (6‑0) leads the group, which also features New Zealand (4‑2).

To qualify for next year’s FIBA World Cup in Qatar, Gilas Pilipinas must finish either in the top three of Group E or as the best fourth‑place team across two groups. The former is the direct path to the quadrennial hoops showcase, while the latter is a backdoor route that will depend partly on how Group F—composed of Lebanon, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, China, and Saudi Arabia—plays out.

Gilas Pilipinas’ Margin of Error Is Miniscule

At the moment, Gilas Pilipinas is far from direct qualification and just a game away from relying on the fourth‑place route. That is precisely why Ramos and the rest of the nationals are aiming for perfection—anything less would severely undermine the country’s chances of making it to the World Cup.

“When we first started, we already discussed that we can’t lose,” Ramos said of Gilas Pilipinas’ thin margins in the second round. “We gotta shoot for being perfect to give ourselves a chance to make the World Cup.”

That is how small Gilas Pilipinas’ margin of error is now. Perfection in the second round only gives the Philippines a chance, as it is entirely possible that an 8‑4 overall record still won’t be enough to secure third place in Group E. Australia at 6‑0 is most likely to finish at the top, leaving New Zealand, Iran, Jordan, and the Philippines to battle for the other two outright berths.

“We played Jordan many times before, and Iran is a bit unfamiliar, but they are both good teams,” said Ramos. “Iran plays very good team basketball, and Jordan has some high‑level individual players.”

A Total Team Effort

Perfection won’t come easy for Gilas Pilipinas. In fact, the nationals are already facing adversity in Window 4 as they prepare to take on Jordan and Iran without Justin Brownlee. Ramos, however, knows exactly what he and everyone else must do.

“Play together as a team. Everyone’s gonna contribute and play their roles. Play hard, then we’ll see what happens with the results,” Ramos said of what it will take to beat the two Middle Eastern powerhouses.

The first test for Gilas Pilipinas is Jordan, whom the nationals will play on Friday, August 28, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Iran follows on Sunday, August 30, at the same venue.
