The FEU Tamaraws pulled off a statement win in the UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament, shocking the defending champions La Salle Green Archers, 90‑78, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The Tamaraws came out firing, building a 12‑point lead, 25‑13, by the end of the first quarter. La Salle spent the rest of the game trying to claw its way back, but FEU consistently had an answer whenever the Green Archers threatened.
Kirby Mongcopa then erupted for 13 points in the third quarter, helping the Tamaraws maintain their advantage heading into the final frame.
“I felt like we just prepared for it. I actually told the guys before the game that I felt we’re gonna start playing really good basketball,” said FEU head coach Sean Chambers. “What we did was we got in the gym, we got better. We pushed each other. Sometimes pain can be your best teacher.”
