The Meralco Bolts authored an endgame escape act on Tuesday, holding off the Blackwater Bossing, 120-115, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium for back-to-back wins in this PBA Governors’ Cup. The win hiked the Bolts’ record to 4-5 and dropped the Bossing to the same win-loss slate. More importantly, Meralco’s victory moved them into solo fourth in Group B, one game ahead of Blackwater and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
What Happened?
Blackwater got off to a red-hot start in this one, taking the opening frame, 36-32, behind Kentrell Barkley’s 11 points in the first seven minutes and Sedrick Barefield’s 9 in the latter part of the quarter.
Meralco, though, bounced back in the second canto behind Jordon Varnado’s 11 and contributions off the bench from Chris Banchero, Javee Mocon, and Cliff Hodge. The Bolts’ defense also held steady, allowing them to take a 68-58 bubble going into halftime after a 36-22 second quarter.
Meralco then turned things up a notch after halftime, pushing the lead to as high as 86-66 at the midway mark of the third thanks to 11 big points from Chris Newsome—nine of them from a trio of treys. The Bolts were still up, 91-73, with under four remaining, but the Bossing finished the third on a 13-6 run to get to within 97-86.
Blackwater continued its rally in the fourth and even took the lead twice—the first at 111-109 on a Barefield jumper and then again at 113-111 on a Barefield drive. But a Newsome and-one gave Meralco the lead, while an uncontested Cliff Hodge undergoal stab off a botched defensive rotation pushed the lead to 116-113. The Bolts then held on for the win.
Who Stood Out?
Newsome turned back the clock for Meralco, delivering a vintage New-New line of 24 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal on 9-for-18 shooting from the field and 4-for-9 from distance. Varnado had a big game as well, leading the Bolts with 31 points to go along with his 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.
On the other side, Barefield fired a conference-high 31 points on 9-for-18 shooting as he nearly willed Blackwater to a win down the stretch. Barkley complemented him as he finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 dimes.
3 Keys to the Game
- Endgame poise. The Bossing looked like they had this game in the bag with Barefield taking over in the fourth. But Meralco fended them off with Newsome and Varnado making just enough big plays down the stretch. The Bolts’ defense also held steady in the game’s final possessions, keeping Barefield off the lane and forcing contested shots.
- Interior scoring. The Bolts found ways to repeatedly pound the ball inside, whether it was Newsome or Varnado getting to the rim, Bates and Hodge getting second-chance opportunities in the paint, or Mocon finding himself open inside. The result was a 66-44 advantage in interior scoring for Meralco.
- Ball movement. Meralco’s 120 points are just two off the team’s conference high, and that’s a testament to the Bolts moving the ball around to find the best shot available. In the end, Newsome and company recorded 25 assists as against only 13 for Blackwater, whose offense routinely involved Barefield, Barkley, and RK Ilagan going one on one.
