PBA Governors’ Cup Playoff Watch: Blackwater Aims to Stay Alive, Rain or Shine Hopes to Keep Up

The PBA Governors’ Cup is down to its final four play dates, including the one later today that will see the Titan Ultra Giant Risers take on the Terrafirma Dyip and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters face off against the Blackwater Bossing. The first game obviously has no bearing and is just a battle for pride, while the nightcap has serious playoff implications.

What Tonight’s Game Means for Rain or Shine

For Rain or Shine, things are quite simple. Beat Blackwater and it’s on to the quarterfinals regardless of the result of its last game in this PBA Governors’ Cup.

The Elasto Painters enter their game against the Bossing at 4-3 after receiving a 129-111 beating from Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the two teams’ first game in the restart. A win later tonight gives Yeng Guiao’s wards five wins, and that would be enough to tow them into the playoffs as Blackwater will join the Meralco Bolts at the cellar of Group B with six losses—a loss total that Rain or Shine won’t reach anymore if it scores a fifth win later tonight.

What Tonight’s Game Means for Blackwater

Tonight’s game is also pretty straightforward for Blackwater. It needs to win if it wants to have a better chance to make it to the quarterfinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup.

At the moment, the Bossing are 3-5 after back-to-back tough losses—a 120-115 heartbreak against Meralco and a 107-101 defeat to the Magnolia Hotshots. A sixth loss, therefore, will leave Blackwater perilously close to elimination, with its fate hanging in the balance depending on the results of later games. If the Bossing drop to 3-6, the only hope they have to make it to the next stage is for Ginebra to win against the Phoenix Fuel Masters and for them to beat the barangay by a mile to trigger a three-way tie at 4-6 and possibly win out via quotient.

The PBA Governors’ Cup will continue later today at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. The first game will be between Titan Ultra and Terrafirma in a battle of two teams with nothing else to play for other than a final win. Next will be Rain or Shine versus Blackwater with playoff implications.
