The trailer for the Netflix Documentary “Court of Gold” was released yesterday January 24 2025 and here’s what we can expect out of it.

The Protagonists

The documentary will show the behind-the-scenes footage and interviews for the Men’s Basketball Tournament in the Paris Olympics 2024. “Court of Gold” is soon to be released on Netflix on February 18 2025 and it follows the story of Canada, Serbia, the United States of America, and the host country France.

Each team included in the documentary was selected in their respective Groups. Group A, also known as the “Group of Death” features Canada, Spain, Greece, and Australia. Group B features France, Japan, Brazil, and the 2023 FIBA World Cup Champs, Germany. Lastly, Group C has South Sudan, Puerto Rico, Serbi, and the country who have the most gold medals in Olympic Men’s Basketball, Team USA.

NBA Superstars will be the face of their own National Team. Players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Canada, Victor Wembanyama of France, and Kevin Durant of the USA will be detailing their thoughts and opinions on what it was like during the competition.

Based on the trailer, we would also be hearing the Head Coaches of the featured countries as well as sports broadcasters and analysts sharing their thoughts about the tournament and even former Team USA players like Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade.

“World Champion of what? The United States?!” – Noah Lyles

One motivation for the Americans to win the gold in this tournament is the infamous press conference of USA Track Runner Noah Lyles last August 2023. During the press con after he won the men’s 100m final at the World Championships he had something to say for NBA players winning an NBA title.

“You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have ‘world champion’ on their head,” he said. “World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong, I love the U.S. at times, but that ain’t the world…We are the world.”

The self-proclaimed fastest man in the world sparked a huge backlash among NBA players. Kind of funny how Americans don’t support their fellow countrymen but this gave a huge boost for the players of USA Head Coach Steve Kerr to win the penultimate prize of all.

USA against The World

Following their only loss in the 2020 Japan Olympics, a lot of hoop fans have predicted the world has caught up to the talent and greatness of Team USA. And even though the US had 1 loss in the previous Olympics, they still won the gold but a lot of people have doubts if they can still win the gold.

Aside from having one loss in the 2020 Japan Olympics, the last time that the Americans had the world a huge disappointment and failure was during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Team USA only won the bronze medal in that tournament while Argentina won the gold and Italy settled for silver.

Another reason why the narrative of the world is catching up to the greatness of the US is during the FIBA World Cup in 2019 and 2023. Last 2019, the team only settled for #7 place with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses as they suffered a shocking defeat from France in the Quarter-finals and against Serbia in the Classification Games of #5-#8. During 2023, they still couldn’t get a medal as they finished the tournament with a 5-3 record. They lost against the Lithuanians in the second round, the Germans in the Semis, and in the hands of Canadians in the Bronze Medal game.

Spoilers for the Ending

Even though the trailer was cool and everything, we all know how it ended. Team USA defeats France in the final game. Yes, teams around the planet are catching up to them and oftentimes getting the win from them in FIBA Tournaments and exhibition games but what matters the most is they still went home with a gold.

In the last 20 Olympics, the Americans have won the Gold 17 times, including the one in Paris, France. This just proves that Team USA is still the golden standard in basketball.
