The duo of Alex Eala and Coco Gauff booked a ticket in the 2025 Italian Open quarterfinals after beating the young Italians, Tyra Grant and Lisa Pigato.
Experience Beats Potential
After winning in their first match in the Doubles Tournament against Alexandra Panova and Fanny Stollar last week, Eala and Gauff made quick work against the lower-ranked Italian opponents despite having the home-court advantage.
No. 335 Grant and No. 548 Pigato still put up a decent fight, but the experience of the No. 70 Eala and No. 3 Gauff still prevailed in their match.
Final score: 6-2 and 6-3
The Filipina and American duo came out firing right off the bat with a 3-0 lead in the first set. The young Italians did manage to stop the bleeding, and it still wasn’t enough to give a great rally.
In the second set, Grant and Pigato were able to keep in step after tying the game 1-1. But it was Gauff who made a mini-rally of her own to make the score 3-1. Penultimately, the inexperienced Italians just weren’t ready to take on the heavy hitters of tennis.
Toughest Match Ahead: Quarterfinals
This Round-of-16 match allows the star-studded pair to be in the quarterfinals, wherein they will face another Italian duo, but this time, their opponents are way more experienced and talented.
No. 6 Sara Errani and No. 5 Jasmine Paolini will face Alex Eala and Coco Gauff later this week.
This upcoming match will undoubtedly be the toughest game that the Filipino-American duo will face.
