The duo of Alex Eala and Coco Gauff reached its end when they lost last night, May 14, against the Italian tandem of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in a classic 3-set thriller at the Quarterfinals of the Italian Open 2025.
Comeback Falls Short
Unlike their previous 2 matches, which were against Alexandra Panova & Fanny Stollar and Tyra Grant & Lisa Pigato, the Filipina-American duo were able to dispatch their opponents with ease.
But this time, against higher ranked Italian opponents and a homecourt disadvantage, the great run of the Eala-Gauff tandem reached its finale.
In the first set, Alex and Coco faced an early deficit. Down 0-1, the No. 70 Eala and No. 3 Gauff managed to take the lead 5-3. But then, the No. 6 Errani and No. 5 Paolini took control of the match and won it, 7-5.
During the second set, Eala and Gauff yet again trailed 0-1. Though, somehow, the two were able to get into their zone and win it all, 6-3. This meant for a Set 3.
For the final set, it was wire to wire. It ultimately felt like it was a match made in heaven as the duos were evenly matched against one another. The game was tied 6-6 but again, both Errani and Paolini proved to the world why they are such high ranked players in tennis.
They managed to break the tie and win set 3, 10-7.
The Italian duo will then face the Russian tandem of Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in the semifinals of the Italian Open 2025.
Now In Their Separate Ways
This game concludes the pairing of Alex Eala and Coco Gauff with both athletes moving on with their separate paths.
Before this match, Gauff won her game against Mirra Andreeva in the single’s tournament, which meant she’ll move forward for the WTA 1000 semifinals.
On the other hand Eala, this marks her last WTA tournament before playing in the Grand Slam at the French Open later this month.
