Czech Curse Continues as Alex Eala Gets Thumped by Karolina Muchova

Alex Eala won’t be able to duplicate her semifinals finish at the Miami Open after losing to Czech opponent Karolína Muchova, 6–0, 6–2, in Round of 16 action on Monday.

The 13th-seeded Muchova quickly asserted her dominance from the opening game, putting Eala under pressure immediately.

The Czech broke the Filipina’s serve in the first game after forcing errors and capitalizing on a double fault.

From there, Muchova dictated the pace with a mix of powerful baseline shots, clever angles, and well-timed net approaches. Eala struggled to settle into the match as Muchová continued to attack both wings and keep the rallies firmly under her control.

The result was a one-sided opening set, with Muchová sweeping all six games in just over 20 minutes. Eala found herself unable to hold serve, as the Czech conceded only a handful of points while racing to a perfect opening set.

Muchova Overpowers Eala

The second set followed a similar script early on, with Muchova extending her run to 10 straight games to build a commanding 4–0 lead.

Despite the daunting deficit, Eala managed to show resilience. The 20-year-old finally broke the run in the fifth game of the set, drawing loud cheers from the Filipino supporters in the crowd. The world-ranked No. 29 later added another hold to prevent an even more lopsided finish.

Still, the consistency and precision of the world-ranked No. 14 remained overwhelming. The Czech maintained control on her service games and never faced a break point throughout the match, finishing with 20 winners while committing far fewer errors than her opponent.

With the win, Eala will now turn her attention to clay play—and maybe plot ways to beat players from the Czech Republic, to whom she has lost to 13 straight times already. Meanwhile, Muchova will next face Victoria Mboko in the quarterfinals.

Earlier in the tournament, the pride of the Philippines defeated Laura Siegemund in the Round of 64 and then outclassed Magda Linette in the Round of 32.
