Alex Eala will make her main draw debut at the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany on April 14 against Filipino-Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
Who has the upper hand in this clay court battle?
Leylah Fernandez: A Hard Court Champion
Beyond sharing Filipino heritage with Eala, the 23-year-old Leylah Fernandez is a five-time hard court champion. She won back-to-back titles at the Monterrey Open in 2021 and 2022, added the Hong Kong Open in 2023, and last year claimed both the Washington Open and the Japan Women’s Open.
The two have already faced each other in 2026—albeit in doubles. Eala, partnered with Janice Tjen, defeated Leylah Fernandez and Kristina Mladenovic in the Round of 16 of the Mubadala Open.
On clay, however, Fernandez has struggled. It remains the one surface where her game has yet to consistently click.
Alex Eala and Leylah Fernandez: Searching for Clay Court Breakthrough
As it turns out, both players are on remarkably similar footing on the dirt.
World No. 25 Fernandez has won just two of seven clay court matches since last year—a stretch that includes her recent Round of 16 exit at the Charleston Open. World No. 46 Eala is only marginally better at 3–5, with her own Round of 16 exit at the Linz Open her most recent result on the surface.
That shared struggle is precisely what makes this matchup so compelling. This is not a battle between a clay court specialist and an outsider—it is a contest of who can adapt faster and outmaneuver the other on a surface neither has fully mastered. For Filipino fans watching on both sides, it is also a rare treat.
A clay court breakthrough is on the line. Both players know it.
