History won’t repeat itself as 19-year-old Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala falls short against defending champion Iga Swiatek at the 2025 WTA Mutua Madrid Open.
Eala Takes First Set in Thrilling Madrid Open Showdown
After beating the No. 2 ranked Iga Swiatek in the previous quarterfinals of the Miami Open, Alex Eala went band-for-band in 3 sets against the reigning champion at Madrid.
However, the veteran experience from the 4-time French Open champion proved to be too much for the young tennis legend.
In the first set, Eala was able to strike first blood as she won 6 – 4, giving the crowd and her opponent flashes of similarity to what happened in Miami last month. But the 23-year-old Polish player displayed her familiarity with the clay-court.
Swiatek wins the second set 6 – 4 and then proceeds to show everyone the true form of a champion as she finishes the third set with a final score of 6 – 2. Not allowing Eala to give the 13th loss of her career.
With this win, Swiatek advances to Round of 32 where Linda Noskova from Czech Republic waits for her. She also improved her WTA Open record to 14 – 2 and overall professional record of 91-12. This win-loss record is by-far the single best record by any active women’s player.
What’s Next for Alex Eala: Upcoming Tournaments in Spain, Italy, and the 2025 French Open
Even with this loss, the grind still continues for the No. 72 Eala as reported from Spin.ph, she is expected to one of two more events in Spain and Italy before heading to Roland Garros for the grand slam in 2025 French Open on May 25.
Alex Eala is also reported to be the 74th seed in the 2025 French Open, according to the list the organizers released last April 15.
With these upcoming tournaments, it can be anticipated that Eala’s current rank will still improve as during the Oeiras Open and Mutua Madrid Open, she was able to beat No. 182 Anouk Koevermans and No. 64 Viktoriya Tomova.
