Late on May 30, 2025 (Philippine time), Alex Eala and her partner Renata Zarazua saw their French Open women’s doubles run end in the second round with a loss to Olga Danilovic and Anastasia Potapova.
Lopsided Victory
Philippines’ finest as well as the star athlete of Mexico couldn’t get into rhythm throughout their against the Russian and Serbian duo.
Eala and Zarazua saw themselves facing a 0-2 deficit in Set 1. Unfortunately, there was no comeback story for the world-ranked No. 69 and No. 74. And in the end, it was a lopsided win for Danilovic and Potapova from the get-go.
Final Score: 6-1 and 6-3
Alex and Renata never got close throughout their match. This loss resulted in an early exit in the women’s doubles and ended the Roland Garros stint for the 20-year-old tennis legend from the Philippines.
Pinoy Pride in France
Despite not having the result she dreamt about, she still made all of her fellow kababayans proud as their last doubles match against Emily Appleton and Yvonne Cavallé-Reimers is the only time wherein a Filipina athlete win a main draw match in a Grand Slam tournament.
In her singles tournament of the Grand Slam, Alex wasn’t able to complete a comeback after playing 3 sets against Emiliana Arango.
Where to Next? Canada? US?
As of writing this, there’s still no clear word from Alex Eala on what will be the next tournament she’ll compete in after her first-ever French Open tournament.
According to the WTA website, there are 3 tournaments that a tennis star may potentially join, and all of them are on hard courts. There’s WTA 1000 Omnium Banque Nationale (National Bank Open) in Montreal, Canad, a set to be played from July 27 to August 7, 2025. Up next is the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open in the US where it’ll be played from August 7 to 18, 2025. Lastly, there’s the Grand Slam US Open set to take place in New York, USA, from August 24 to September 7, 2025.
Whatever Alex’s next move will be, all of these events are set to make her world ranking rise, just like what happened after her Italy Open stint, which allowed her to move up from No. 70 to No. 69.
With all of this at hand, one thing is certain. The entire Philippines will continue to support Eala for making noise in all of her accomplishments internationally.
