Colombia’s Camila Osorio moved on to the quarterfinals of the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open on Wednesday after beating Japan’s Mai Hontama, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.
Afterward, she pointed out how she takes things one day at a time and how she uses every day as a chance to learn—whether about tennis or about life.
“I think we are all learning every single day of our lives no matter what,” the 24-year-old Colombian told reporters. “You wake up and then you learn something… It’s the same for me and my career.”
Prior to her win over Hontama, Osorio beat another Japanese bet, Sakura Hosogi, 6-4, 6-3, setting the stage for her Round of 16 clash with Hontama. And between the two matches, the world No. 84 thinks she was calmer this time around.
“Every time that I step onto the court, there’s something new that comes out, and I need to find solutions. It’s really interesting…. For example, all I can tell myself is I ran more calm, and when I’m more focused, I think I can perform better.”
She’ll have to be even more focused when she next takes the court because she’ll be facing the hometown heroine: Alex Eala.
Camila Osorio Has Alex Eala Next
Entering as the fifth seed of the Philippine Women’s Open, Camila Osorio has more than proven that she is a legit contender for the title. Now, she’ll be taking on world No. 49 Alex Eala in what promises to be an explosive match.
Osorio appears ready. After dispatching Hontama, the pride of Colombia told reporters she’s looking forward to facing Eala, whom she described as a “great competitor.”
“I would love to play her, to be honest. I think she’s a really great competitor, she’s doing well on the tour right now, and she has a very strong personality on the court,” Osorio said of Eala. “She’s very passionate, and she competes to the very last point, which I really like about her game.”
Eala and Osorio have not played each other yet, and their first face-off figures to be a treat for what’s sure to be a sellout crowd later.
“Alex, if you’re watching this, I’m ready to compete,” she added.
Osorio looks ready, indeed. Eala better be as well.
