CJ Cansino’s Breakout Season: How the Meralco Young Star Is Rising Fast in the PBA

It took a while, but CJ Cansino appears to have cracked the code. The former UAAP champion with the UP Fighting Maroon has emerged as one of the PBA’s most exciting young wings, blending relentless energy, smooth scoring, and an unmistakable competitive fire in only his second season.

From UAAP Standout to PBA Prospect

Initially a product of the storied UST basketball program before transferring to UP, Cansino first captured the attention of Filipino fans with his fearless play in the UAAP, where he became known for his slashing and spirited play. Picked 11th overall by the Meralco Bolts in the Season 49 PBA Draft, Cansino was expected to be a solid pick-up for the aging Bolts. However, the young man played below expectations and was mostly hit-or-miss in what was an up-and-down rookie season.

This season has been remarkably different. Cansino is a lot more confident and decisive now and is showing flashes of star potential with his confident shooting, sure-handed playmaking, and improving defence. He has even shown the ability to rise in big moments—something rare for young players.

Now, it appears that sky’s the limit for the 6-foot-1 Cansino, who is trending towards becoming one of Meralco’s emerging pillars—a possible running mate and, eventually, successor to long-time franchise cornerstone Chris Newsome.

Cansino isn’t there yet. But he might be closing in fast.
