On Friday, the Benilde Lady Blazers bounced back from their loss to the Letran Lady Knights with an impressive straight-sets victory over the Perpetual Help Lady Altas. The win nudged the five-peat-seeking reigning champs closer to a win-once edge in their group ahead of the NCAA women’s volleyball playoffs
Afterwards, Benilde’s Clydel Catarig highlighted the importance of work ethic in the Lady Blazers’ quest for another title.
Win or Lose, More Effort Is Needed
Against the Lady Altas, Catarig and the rest of the Lady Blazers showed poise and dominance in getting the straight-sets victory to improve to 7 wins and 3 losses.
Then, in a postmatch interview, the 24-year-old Lady Blazer talked about the importance of working hard regardless of match results.
“Siyempre kailangan pa rin namin sipagan bawat isa. And then [mag] sipag lang talaga kami sa training para makapag adjust kami sa next namin na kalaban,” Catarig said. “‘Yung game mindset namin is parang mag-ingay lang kami sa loob kase pangit ‘pag tahimik lang kami, so isa ding nagpapa-boost ‘yung parang happy kami ganun.”
Catarig finished the match with 16 points, 15 attacks, and 1 block.
Clydel Catarig and the Others Need to Step Up
Efforts like the one Clydel Catarig had against Perpetual will certainly go a long way in helping Benilde achieve a five-peat this season, and she knows that it’s her turn, along with the team’s younger players, to get the job done, like their seniors.
“Need namin na parang ‘yung mindset namin na kailangan naming sipagan para siyempre defending [champs]. Pero iba na ‘yun eh, ibang mga seniors na namin ang gumawa nun, so bago ngayon. Need namin na kami naman yung gagawa,” she emphasized.
Despite the big win, Benilde still sits at no. 2 in Group A behind Perpetual. With the playoffs looming, Clydel Catarig and the rest of the Lady Blazers will surely need to work even harder.
