Angeles, PAMPANGA – The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) defending champions, the Pampanga Giant Lanterns, took down the no.1 team in the South division, the Quezon Huskers, in what looked like what could unfold in the 2024 MPBL Finals. Pampanga took the dub behind Archie Concepcion’s career night and another double-double performance from reigning MVP Justine Baltazar.
Giant Lanterns Secure Second Seed with Strong Team Effort
The Giant Lanterns, 26-2, have secured the second seed in the North division after the 75-69 win over the Huskers. Concepcion erupted for a career-high 30 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, and an impressive 5 steals, all while shooting 77% from the field. Meanwhile, Baltazar gave 11 points and 17 rebounds. Encho Serrano also powered the offense with his 14 points. One of the surprises that night was PBA legend Arwind Santos, who played for Pampanga for the first time this season.
Despite a very close matchup, Quezon trailed through 40 minutes of play and couldn’t find an answer for Concepcion. The Quezon Huskers are now 20-6, tied with Zamboanga, but are still the top team in the South.
The battle between two of the best teams in the North and South proved to be a preview of a possible Finals matchup.
Another North vs. South Matchup Awaits
The No. 1 team in the North, the San Juan Knights (25-1), will take on another title contender, the Zamboanga Master Sardines (20-6), on September 20, at the Amoranto Gym in Quezon City.
Michael Calisaan and the three-point king Orlan Wamar Jr. will face the Marcelino twins for a battle between two giants!
