Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died at age 28 following a car crash in Spain, which also claimed the life of his brother, André Silva. The tragic news has sent shockwaves throughout the football world.
Jota had just returned from international duty, helping Portugal win the UEFA Nations League alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. It was a dream summer, capped by his wedding just 11 days before the fatal accident. Ronaldo mourned the loss, writing: “Just now we were together in the national team, just now you had gotten married. This doesn’t make sense.”
He appeared in 182 matches for Liverpool across all competitions, scoring 65 goals and dishing out 22 assists. Known for his sharp finishing and relentless work rate, Jota helped the Reds win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. He also made 49 appearances for Portugal, twice winning the Nations League.
Liverpool FC described his passing as “a tragedy that transcends football” and has opened a book of condolence at Anfield. Tributes from teammates, clubs, and fans have poured in. A funeral will be held in Porto on Saturday.
