The FEU Tamaraws secured a perfect 2–0 start after dismantling the UE Red Warriors, 25–20, 25–23, 25–23, in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
FEU appeared in full control in the third set after Amet Bituin delivered a crucial point to give the Tamaraws a 22–17 advantage. However, UE refused to go down quietly, mounting a late rally behind Isaiah Roca’s off-the-block hit, Xjhann Camaymayan’s quick attack, Raquim Aceron’s crosscourt strike, and a service ace from Jio Rada to cut the deficit to just one, 21–22.
FEU Tamaraws Display Nerves of Steel in Tight Third Frame
Both teams exchanged service errors before Mikko Espartero restored order for FEU with a crosscourt hit to bring the Tamaraws to match point. An attack error by Cjay Nabora ultimately sealed the straight-sets victory for FEU.
“Respect to our opponent, UE, because you saw how they played. They refused to give away points. Their defense and serving forced us into out-of-system plays,” said FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo. “Thank you to the boys because they were able to overcome that challenge. It’s also about mindset. In our games on Saturday, we’ll just play the best that we can and bring out our full potential.”
Lirick Mendoza led the Tamaraws with an impressive 16 points built on 11 attacks, 4 blocks, and 1 ace. Dryx Saavedra contributed 11 points on 9 attacks and 2 blocks, along with 7 excellent digs. Doula Ndongala added 10 points, while Amet Bituin finished with 9 points, highlighted by 2 service aces.
Isaiah Roca paced the Red Warriors with 11 points, while Raquim Aceron finished with 9 points and 11 excellent receptions.
The FEU Tamaraws will next face defending champions NU Bulldogs on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Earlier that day, UE will take on the Adamson Soaring Falcons at 9:00 a.m.
