The Filipinas of the Philippine Women’s National Team are in danger of missing out on the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup knockout stage as the numbers just got a lot more daunting. This comes after Uzbekistan pulled off a rousing 4-0 demolition of Bangladesh on Monday that dimmed the Filipinas’ glimmer of hope of making it to the next round as one of the two best third-place finishers among three groups.
Filipinas Trail in Tiebreaker Trap
The Filipinas finished their Group A campaign with three points and a goal difference of -2 after beating Iran, 2-0, on Sunday. Before Uzbekistan’s trouncing of Bangladesh, that goal difference felt like a decent insurance policy. However, Uzbekistan’s victory in Group B has essentially neutralized that advantage.
Both the Philippines and Uzbekistan now sit on three points with an identical goal difference of -2. Under tournament regulations, the next tiebreaker is total goals scored in all group matches. By putting four past Bangladesh, Uzbekistan now has 4 goals to the Philippines’ 2. This technicality allows Uzbekistan to leapfrog the Filipinas in the ranking of third-placed teams, officially securing their spot in the quarterfinals.
One Spot Left, Three Teams Fighting
With Uzbekistan claiming the first of the two best third-placer slots, the Filipinas are now left fighting for the final remaining seat at the table against both Vietnam and Chinese Taipei.
Vietnam currently sits in third place in Group C with three points and a goal difference of 0. They face powerhouse Japan in their final match. For the Philippines to stay ahead, they need Japan to deliver a heavy blow—specifically, a win by three goals or more—to push Vietnam’s goal difference below -2.
Chinese Taipei could potentially complicate things even more. If they defeat or draw with India, they could also finish on four points or more, potentially pushing Vietnam into the third-place conversation with a superior goal difference to the Philippines.
The Waiting Game
For Mark Torcaso and the Filipinas, the agency is gone. They have done their part by securing a win in their final group match, but they are now at the mercy of the scorelines in Group C.
The 4-0 result in Perth was exactly what the Philippines didn’t want to see: a dominant, high-scoring performance that prioritized efficiency over drama. It has narrowed the path to the knockout stages to a razor-thin corridor. The Filipinas now need a combination of a Japanese masterclass and a favorable result in the India–Chinese Taipei clash to keep their Asian Cup journey alive.
