The Philippine Women’s National Football Team, better known as the Filipinas, are now on the brink of elimination after suffering their second straight loss in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asia Cup as they fell to South Korea, 3-0.
South Korea seized control early and struck twice in quick succession during the opening minutes of the first half. In the 12th minute, Jeon Yu-gyeong broke the deadlock after receiving a well-timed pass from Kim Shin-ji inside the penalty area. Jeon turned swiftly before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel to give the Taegeuk Ladies the lead.
Just three minutes later, Park Soo-jeong doubled the advantage with the standout goal of the match. The midfielder collected the ball near the edge of the box and curled a precise strike into the top corner, leaving McDaniel with no chance.
Filipinas Struggle to Find Rhythm
The Filipinas struggled to gain momentum throughout the half, with their best opportunity coming late when Carleigh Frilles attempted a long-range effort that was comfortably handled by the Korean goalkeeper.
The Philippines attempted to generate attacking chances after the break but struggled to break through South Korea’s organized defense.
Sara Eggesvik had an opportunity early in the second half after Katrina Guillou delivered a header across the goal, but the chance went unfinished. Guillou later tried her luck again in the 74th minute off a pass from Angela Beard, though her shot drifted wide.
Despite the Filipinas’ efforts, South Korea maintained control of the match and limited clear scoring opportunities.
South Korea Delivers Again
South Korea put the match beyond doubt midway through the second half.
After McDaniel produced a strong save to deny Son Hwa-yeon, the ensuing corner created chaos inside the six-yard box. Mun Eun-ju reacted quickest to the loose ball and poked it home from close range to extend the lead to three.
The victory gave South Korea its second consecutive win in the tournament, strengthening its bid for a quarterfinal spot.
The loss dropped the Filipinas to a 0-2 record in Group A following their 1-0 loss to Australia. They are now facing a must-win match against Iran on Sunday to have a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. The top two finishers in each group automatically advance to the knockout stage, with the two best third-placed teams rounding out the next phase.
