The Filipinas of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team showed resolve despite a trying 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, winning their playoff against Uzbekistan on Thursday to backdoor their way into the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
With a World Cup berth on the line, both teams approached the match cautiously in the opening half. The Filipinas were the first to threaten when Sara Eggesvik broke through the Uzbek defense and fired a shot from outside the penalty area, but the attempt sailed just wide of the post.
Uzbekistan responded with several attempts of their own. Lyudmila Karachik tried her luck from distance, while Zarina Mamatkarimova managed a shot inside the crowded box, though Philippine goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel was well positioned to gather the effort.
The Filipinas nearly capitalized on a defensive mistake late in the half when Angela Beard pressured goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova near the six-yard area, but the Uzbek keeper recovered quickly to prevent the breakthrough, as the match remained scoreless at halftime.
Angela Beard Breaks Scoring Drought for Filipinas
The Philippines wasted little time asserting control after the restart.
Just two minutes into the second half, Jael-Marie Guy delivered a precise cross into the penalty area that found Beard. The defender volleyed the ball goalward, with the attempt striking the crossbar before bouncing across the line to give the Filipinas a 1-0 advantage in the 47th minute.
Momentum firmly swung in the Philippines’ favor minutes later.
In the 52nd minute, Guy once again played provider, sending another curling delivery into the box. Jaclyn Sawicki met the cross with a looping header that sailed past Jonimqulova and into the net to double the lead.
Uzbekistan attempted to mount a response in the remaining minutes, but the Filipinas’ defense—anchored by Hali Long and McDaniel—held firm to preserve the clean sheet.
In the preliminary round, the Philippines lost to both Australia and South Korea before finally entering the win column against Iran. Then, in the quarterfinals, Japan beat the Filipinas going away, 7-1.
Fortunately, that loss to Japan didn’t extinguish the Filipinas’ chances of making it to the World Cup. Instead, that left them in a must-win match against Uzbekistan. And, with everything on the line, the Filipinas put all those losses and heartbreaks in the rearview mirror and rose to the challenge.
Now, they’re bound for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
