Filipinas Notch Big Win Over Iran to Stay Alive in 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup—But Fate Not in Their Hands

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team, the Filipinas, notched a huge win on Sunday, beating Iran 2-0 at the Gold Coast Stadium to stay alive in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

The two teams had several chances to net a breakthrough goal early, but neither could capitalize. But, in the 29th minute, former Western United player Sara Eggesvik put the Filipinas on the board when she hit the ball into the right side.

This win is the Philippines’ first in the tournament after losses to Australia and South Korea.

Filipinas Fend Off Iran

That goal by Eggesvik got Iran into desperation mode as the Iranians frantically searched for the equalizer. But the Filipinas’ defense held firm throughout, denying their counterparts’ every attack.

Crucially, the Filipinas scored a second goal in the 82nd minute courtesy of substitute Chandler McDaniel. The veteran fired the ball toward the bottom left corner that nestled into the back of the net after being deflected.

Minutes later, the Philippines appeared to have scored what would’ve been a massive third goal after Alessandrea Carpio cut the ball to McDaniel, who then put the ball in again. However, the goal was ruled out as Carpio was called offside.

How Can the Filipinas Advance?

The 2-0 win over Iran was exactly what the Filipinas needed to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive, but the work isn’t done just yet. By securing third place in Group A with 3 points and a -2 goal difference, the team now has to wait on the results from the other groups to see if they’ll advance as one of the two best third-placed squads.

The math, though, is tight, with the most direct path involving a favorable result in the Bangladesh-Uzbekistan match later today. The best outcome is for the match to end in a draw. An alternative would be for either side to win, but not by more than three goals. In both scenarios, the Philippines would stay ahead of Group B’s third seed in the rankings.

Another path depends on the result of Vietnam versus Japan in Group C. Since Vietnam currently sits on 3 points with a neutral goal difference, the Filipinas would ideally need them to lose by at least three goals to fall below them in the standings.

So, put simply, it’s essentially a waiting game for the Filipinas at this point.
