Fit-Again Terrence Romeo, Terrafirma Stay in the Moment as Franchise Sale Looms

The Terrafirma Dyip are supposedly up for sale. But it looks like the farthest thing on the minds of Terrence Romeo, his teammates, and the coaching staff.

That’s what Romeo told reporters after Terrafirma opened its PBA Philippine Cup campaign with a rousing 95-87 victory over the Phoenix Fuel Masters.

“Kailangan lang namin mag-focus kung ano yung moment namin right now. We’re still Terrafirma, so kelangan namin ibigay ‘yung best namin every game for Terrafirma. Then saka namin iisipin kung ano ‘yung mangyayari pag tapos na kami sa moment namin,” said Romeo, who fired 17 points, all in the second half, on four booming triples.

Terrafirma coach Raymund Tiongco seconded Romeo’s mindset and emphasized the need to stay positive amidst the uncertainty.

“Positive lang dapat. Gusto rin namin na kung mawawala man Terrafirma, at least nasa winning margin rin naman. So, sinasabi ko sa kanila, stay positive dun sa season natin,” he said in the same post-game presser. “Sila meron silang mga contract. Tuloy lang nila, dapat ibigay nila ‘yung best nila. Kung magpapalit man ng management, kelangan pa rin nila maglaro, trabaho nila ‘yun.”

Terrafirma Sale Still Up in the Air, But Terrence Romeo Is Ready for Anything

Terrafirma’s supposed sale was first reported last conference, with Starhorse Shipping Line purportedly the buyer of the PBA’s most woebegone franchise.

Starhorse is bankrolling the Basilan Viva Portmasters in the MPBL and will supposedly buy Terrafirma lock, stock, and barrel. Meaning, it will retain the rights of every Dyip player—including Terrence Romeo, veteran Stanley Pringle, and rookie Mark Nonoy. It will also absorb the rights of former Best Player of the Conference Christian Standhardinger.

However, the sale is yet to be formalized and will still need the approval of two-thirds of the PBA’s board—placing Terrafirma in some sort of limbo at the moment.

For Romeo, that moment is still with the Dyip. But he and his teammates are ready for whatever happens.

“Kung ang mag-takeover is iba, andun lang kami para maglaro para sa Starhorse, pero right now andito kami for Terrafirma. And gaya ng sinabi ni Coach Raymond, gusto namin na magkaron kami ng winning streak,” said the flamboyant guard.

They’re off to a great start.
