Last May 27 2025, the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s 3×3 team failed to move past the expectations as they suffered another horrific loss in Baku, Latvia at the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series.

Got Reggie Miller-ed (Choked)

Fresh from their quarterfinals stint in Marseille, France, the Philippines was placed in Pool D along with Egypt and Austria.

They need to at least win one game in this stage and hope that the quotient system would be in their favor and allow them to be in the quarterfinals. But sadly, things didn’t turn out that way.

In their first game against Egypt, Gilas was leading most of the game and had a 15-8 score with a few minutes remaining. Until they choked.

Egypt’s Raneem Mohamed and Nadine Selaawy fueled a strong rally, attacking the paint to draw fouls and making the most of Gilas Pilipinas’ errors.

With just 2:27 left on the clock, Selaawy knocked down a pivotal two-pointer to even the score. Moments later, Hala ElShaarawy nailed the go-ahead shot, swinging the momentum Egypt’s way.

A costly turnover by the Philippines resulted in a foul on Mohamed with 1:44 remaining, ultimately sealing Gilas’ 21-19 loss.

Tantoy Ferrer led Gilas with 8 points, while Sam Harada contributed 7 points and grabbed 3 boards. Mohamed topped Egypt’s scoring with 8 points, and ElShaarawy added 6 points.

Then in their 2nd game against Austria, the feeling of “missed opportunity” creeped in for the Philippines which resulted in yet another loss.

Austria won, 20-13.

Lexi Pana did everything she can do as she tallied 8 points but Anja Fuchs-Robetin of Austria proved to be more dominant as she scored 10 points and was 8 of 11 from the field.

Bounce Back in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (?)

Finishing the 10th spot in Baku, Latvia it was definitely a downgrade compared to the 7th spot finish they had in Marseille, France. But let’s not all forget their semifinals loss in the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup last March 31 2025.

Now they will try to bounce back from this in the next leg of FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series which will now be played in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from June 18 to 19.
