Gilas Women dropped their second game in the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament with a 113–80 loss to Germany on Thursday.
Much like in their tournament opener against France, Gilas Women fell behind early and couldn’t get back at all. Germany asserted control from the opening quarter and dictated the pace, establishing a double-digit lead and never looking back.
Germany Overwhelms Gilas Women
Separate 9–0 scoring bursts, both in the first and second quarters, widened the margin, allowing Germany to maintain firm control.
Despite brief attempts by the Philippines to chip away at the deficit, the Germans consistently answered with efficient offense and physical interior play. By halftime, the gap had grown significantly as Germany continued to capitalize on its advantage in size and rebounding.
The Germans continued to widen the gap in the second half, relying heavily on their interior dominance.
Gilas Women briefly sparked a rally early in the third quarter when Louna Ozar and Afril Bernardino knocked down consecutive three-pointers for a quick 6–0 run to trim the deficit to 75–56. However, Germany quickly restored order and pushed the lead back to comfortable territory.
The Germans eventually stretched the margin to as much as 33 points late in the fourth quarter to seal the convincing victory.
They finished with 52 points in the paint and converted an impressive 66.7 percent of their shots inside the arc.
Germany also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Philippines 55–26, which helped them maintain a comfortable cushion throughout the contest.
Emily Bessoir Powers Germany
Emily Bessoir spearheaded Germany’s attack with a dominant double-double performance.
The 24-year-old forward delivered 25 points and 13 rebounds while also contributing 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal in just under 28 minutes.
Frieda Bühner added 19 points on an efficient shooting night while controlling the paint. Britta Daub chipped in 16 points to provide additional scoring depth.
Sumayah Sugapong once again carried the offensive load for Gilas Women with 21 points along with 4 assists. She scored 15 of her total in the first half to keep the Philippines within striking distance early.
Team captain Afril Bernardino contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds, while veteran guard Janine Pontejos added 11 points and 2 assists.
Gilas Women Aiming to Bounce Back in Group A
With a 0–2 record, the Philippines are now at the bottom of Group A with Colombia, who are also winless.
Gilas Women have three games left in their schedule, and they will have to figure out a way to bounce back quickly if they want a shot at making it to the next stage.
Gilas Women will next take on Nigeria later today.
