Barangay Ginebra San Miguel leaned on the brilliance of Justin Brownlee and RJ Abarrientos to fend off the Converge FiberXers, 99-93, in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup clash Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Gin Kings improved to 2-1, while Converge dropped its fourth straight to fall to 1-4.
What Happened?
Ginebra opened the game with steady offense from Brownlee and Abarrientos, combining for early buckets to offset Converge’s size advantage inside. The Gin Kings built a slim lead after the first quarter and maintained control through halftime, thanks to Brownlee’s relentless drives and Abarrientos’ perimeter shooting.
The third quarter saw Ginebra stretch the margin, with Troy Rosario and Scottie Thompson chipping in timely baskets. Abarrientos’ jumper pushed the lead to nine, 83-74, early in the fourth, seemingly giving Ginebra breathing room.
But Converge refused to go quietly. A 13-4 run, capped by a Kyler Kelley slam, trimmed the deficit to just two, 85-87. Mikey Williams and Justine Baltazar then spearheaded an 8-0 burst that gave the FiberXers a shocking 93-92 lead with under three minutes left.
That’s when Ginebra’s veterans responded. Rosario, Abarrientos, and Brownlee combined for clutch baskets in the closing stretch. Despite Brownlee missing two free throws with 20.3 seconds left, Converge’s chance to tie ended when Alec Stockton’s ambitious four-point step-back clanged off the board. Brownlee calmly sank two charities to ice the game, 99-93.

Who Stood Out?
Brownlee was once again the anchor for Ginebra, pouring in 33 points while adding 10 rebounds and 4 assists in a vintage all-around performance. Abarrientos matched his import stride for stride, firing 32 points on efficient shooting and dishing out 4 dimes, proving he could shine in the clutch alongside the veteran. Rosario chipped in 10 points and battled hard on the boards to finish with 13 caroms, including 9 on the offensive glass, as he held the fort without frontcourt partner Japeth Aguilar.
For Converge, Justine Baltazar led the way with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Mikey Williams had his best outing in a FiberXers uniform with 16 points, 6 boards, and 8 assists. Williams also fired three triples in the fourth to carry Converge. MJ Garcia added 15 points, and Kyler Kelley was flawless from the field with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
3 Keys to the Game
- Brownlee–Abarrientos tandem. Brownlee and Abarrientos combined for 65 of Ginebra’s 99 points and, more importantly, dictated tempo and delivered in crunch time. Abarrientos did most of his damage in the first three quarters to carry the Ginebra colors, while Brownlee hit the big shots down the stretch to finish things off.
- Turnovers. Converge coughed the ball up 13 times, including twice in the final two minutes—an errant pass by Williams just a few seconds after the two-minute warning and a botched inbound by Alec Stockton with 55 ticks left. The latter, in particular, proved costly as it led to Brownlee hitting what was the game-sealing floater. In all, Ginebra blanked Converge 13-0 in points off turnovers.
- Clutch composure. Ginebra’s veterans steadied the ship when it mattered most, while the FiberXers couldn’t do the same. The two turnovers they committed showed a team lacking endgame poise, as Brownlee and Abarrientos made the big plays for the Barangay on the other side.
