The newest WNBA team Golden State Valkyries continues to impress a lot of basketball fans as they scored 36 points in the 2nd quarter to fully dispatch the Connecticut Suns last June 23.
Control the Rebounds = Control the Game
It wasn’t just scoring more points that the Valkyries did in order to give another win to Ballhalla but they have also dominated the rebounding department in the entire game.
The Valkyries had 51 boards against the 35 of the Suns. They had 19 offensive boards and 32 defensive rebounds.
They also demolished the Suns through scoring in the paint, 32 to 12. The California based squad won the categories of assists (18-14), steals (9-4) and fastbreak points (12-5).
It wasn’t all bad for the Suns who prior to this game, had a win-loss record of 2-11, as they had more blocks (10-3).
Super Subs: Chloe Bibby and Laeticia Amihere
A lot of fans anticipated that this would be a blowout game. And after the 1st quarter which saw the Valkyries only leading by 3 points, 23-20, later in the match the lead ballooned into 30 points.
Aside from the usual double digit scoring from their star player Kayla Thornton, bench players like Chloe Bibby and Laeticia Amihere were given a chance to shine. Bibby played 20 minutes and had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals while Amihere played the most minutes off the bench (23 mins), recorded a double-double performance of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Other players who contributed in collecting the 7th win of the Valkyries were Tiffany Hayes who had 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and Veronica Burton tallied 10 points, 2 assists and a steal.
Up Next: Number 1 Team in the East
The 7-4 Valkyries who currently sits at the #4 spot in the Western conference will try to get back at the #1 team in the Eastern conference, the New York Liberty who currently has a 10-3 win-loss record.
It can be recalled that the Liberties defeated the Valkyries in their back to back games last May 28 (95-67) and May 30 (82-77).
Their 3rd match is set to be played on June 26, Thursday.
