Jasmine Paolini breaks another record in the world of tennis but this time it’s in the doubles match as she and her fellow Italian partner Sara Errani wins it all in the Finals against the Belgium duo of Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova.
Come From Behind Win, Literally
After defeating Coco Gauff in the singles final on May 18, less than 24 hours later, she had to finish the job alongside Errani in the doubles final.
This task wasn’t as easy as a lot may think as fatigue was a huge factor in their matchup.
The Italian pair saw themselves down 0-4 in the first set but with the help of the home crowd cheering them, they won with the final score of 6-4.
In the second set, they then trailed 0-4. And with everything at stake, considering the kind of historical figure the 29 year old can become if she wins it all, they poured everything they got into getting the title with a final score of 7-5.
Postgame Thoughts
In a story by Greg Garber in the WTA website, she asked the Internazionali BNL d’Italia champ some questions after winning the doubles title.
What were your thoughts when you guys fell behind 4-0?
“That was not because I was asleep, was because they were playing amazing. But then somehow, we turned the match. Did some lobs, some variations. Sara? She’s always unbelievable at the net. We know this about her.”
In the end, at 6-5, 40-all, you hit a return winner…
“Yes, that was amazing. That was a relief because it was 40-all, and a tiebreak would have been tough. Just put the ball in, and it worked out.”
What’s Past Is Now Prolonged
Only a select group of women have managed to win both the singles and doubles titles at this tournament during the Open Era, which spans over 50 years. That elite list includes Billie Jean King, Virginia Wade, Chris Evert (who did it twice), Raffaella Reggi, Monica Seles — and now, Jasmine Paolini.
She also became the first player to sweep the singles and doubles titles at a WTA 1000 event since Vera Zvonareva in Indian Wells in 2009.
