Last June 20, when the Indiana Pacers won the Game 6 of the NBA Finals, their women’s team Indiana Fever, couldn’t replicate their success as they bowed down against the Golden State Valkyries.
The #1 Scoring Option Thorton
Kayla Thornton, who has cemented herself as the face of the Valkyries as she once again led her squad to a victory, 88 to 77.
In a game where the WNBA superstar, Caitlyn Clark of Indiana struggled all game long, the Valkyries capitalized on the shooting woes of the most talked about player in the league. The 32 year old Thornton shot the lights out as she went 5-8 from the rainbow country along with 6 boards and a steal.
In 12 games, Kayla has now averaged 14.8 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 0.9 APG, 1.8 SPG while shooting 28.4% from beyond the arc and 38.8% from the field.
Strength in Numbers Bench in Numbers
Golden State’s Bench also was a huge factor in getting their 6th win as 3 out of their 4 bench players scored double digits.
Interestingly, all 4 bench players recorded 1 steal each.
Chloe Bibby, who the Valkyries just signed a standard last June 16 posted 12 points, 3 rebounds, a steal. Laeticia Amihere not only had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists but also recorded a mind blowing 4 block shots. Tiffany Hayes shot 100% from the charity stripe (6-6) accompanied with 14 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists.
Kate Martin was close in scoring double digits, she had 9 points, 5 rebounds and an assist.
Continuing the Broken Winning Streak
The Golden State Valkyries will try to revive their broken 3 game winning streak which was ended by the Dallas Wings last June 18.
They had a convincing win against Los Angeles Aces 95-68, a close win against the Los Angeles Sparks 89-81 and wire to wire victory versus the Seattle Storm 76-70.
Now with a record of 6-6 and is currently sitting as the 4th team in the stacked Western Conference, the ladies in black and violet are looking to ride the tide against the struggling Connecticut Suns from the Eastern Conference.
The Suns are currently the last team from the East at the 6th spot with a record of 2 wins and 6 losses. Valkyries versus Suns are scheduled on June 23.
