Lyann De Guzman did not enter the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference opener trying to steal the spotlight. Instead, she walked away from the Nxled Chameleons’ five-set win with something arguably more valuable: clarity on what it takes to survive at this level.
Inserted with the team down two sets to one against the Farm Fresh Foxies, De Guzman provided timely energy and composure as the Chameleons escaped with a 25-23, 13-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-12 victory.
Lyann De Guzman Learning from the Vets
While the pressure fell heavily on veterans and former Petro Gazz Angels Myla Pablo and Brooke Van Sickle, the moment quietly became a learning window for one of Nxled’s young pieces.
“Actually, sabi ko nga sa previous interviews na kung ano ‘yung kailangan ni coach, magiging ready lang ako, kung open ’yan o opposite. Kung pinasok ako, ibibigay ko lang yung 110 percent ko,” De Guzman said.
The stat sheet showed the rookie finished with just 7 points, but it failed to capture Lyann De Guzman’s defensive stops and stabilizing touches that helped Nxled regain control late in the match.
Learning Never Stops
Off the court, the rookie also embraced the opportunity to learn from seasoned teammates who have navigated similar pressure-filled moments.
“Actually, marami akong natututunan sa mga ates ko. Si Ate Brooke, si Ate Myla, and ang maganda din, they are willing talaga to help us na maging on top sa kung anong performance namin. Nagiging healthy competition siya kasi everybody’s willing to help each other na umangat. As in, team talaga kami,” De Guzman ended.
With Lyann De Guzman learning from two decorated veterans, it appears there’s no way to go for her but up.
