‘Very Professional’ Marvin Jones Finding Groove as Perfect Fit for Meralco

The Meralco Bolts wanted Ismael Romero. And then they didn’t. They ultimately let go of the controversial big man and tapped Marvin Jones instead with about a week to go before the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Jones, a veteran internationalist, had an “okay” debut in a Meralco win over the Converge FiberXers, according to Luigi Trillo, after putting up 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Then, the production dipped in the next two games—a win over the Phoenix Fuel Masters and a loss to the import-less Rain or Shine Elasto Painters—as Jones averaged just 16.0 points while grabbing 15.5 boards.

Marvin Jones Hitting His Stride—Finally

That production, though, has been trending up. Marvin Jones had 24 points and 14 boards in a win against the Titan Ultra Giant Risers. He then had 29 points and 12 boards in a victory over the TNT Tropang 5G. Then, on Saturday, the 32-year-old reinforcement had his best performance yet in a Meralco jersey, dropping 32 points and 14 caroms in the Bolts’ fifth win of the conference, this time at the expense of the winless Macau Black Knights.

And as he continues to hit his stride, Jones is just grateful that the Bolts have embraced him even as he came in virtually last minute. He is also not making a big deal of his improving numbers, noting how he’s just playing a role and is not looking to be some sort of savior.

“I’m just grateful they welcomed me in with open arms. I got here six days before the season started. So I had a week to practice…,” Jones said. “I told them from the first day, I’m here to help you guys. I’m not here to be Superman. You don’t have to pass me the ball every time. Just go play a team game, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Luigi Trillo Lauds Marvin Jones’ Fit in Meralco, Professionalism

Trillo, for his part, is just glad that the Bolts have someone who fits their system and is a positive voice, whether on the court or off it.

“He’s been very professional. He speaks his mind in a very positive way in the huddles. He’s had a big impact for us,” Trillo said. “He’s played all over around the world. He hasn’t been used to also this many minutes. But he fits in. He fits in our culture in terms of not having just one guy dominate. And I think because he understands the game, I think the reason why some of these other guys have had big games is because of him…”

True enough, Meralco’s locals have had their moments to shine, with CJ Cansino, in particular, continuing his ascent to PBA stardom this conference. And if the Bolts’ electrifying start to the Commissioner’s Cup is any indication, don’t be surprised if Marvin Jones and company turn out to be legit title contenders.
