The 2025 MLB All-Star Game delivered high drama and a historic finish, as the National League edged out the American League 7–6 after a dramatic home run derby tiebreaker — the first time the new format has ever been used to decide the Midsummer Classic.
The NL looked poised for a straightforward win, leading 6–4 heading into the ninth. But Padres closer Robert Suarez gave up back-to-back doubles and a run before Mets fireman Edwin Díaz was summoned. Even Díaz couldn’t shut the door, as Steven Kwan’s infield single tied the game at 6-all.
Per rules introduced in 2022, tied All-Star Games now skip extra innings in favor of a home run swing-off. Each league selected three hitters, with each getting three swings. Brent Rooker and Randy Arozarena combined for three homers to give the AL an early edge. After Kyle Stowers managed just one for the NL, the pressure was on Kyle Schwarber, and he delivered.
The Phillies slugger crushed all three of his swings out of the park, stunning the crowd and flipping the score to 4–3. AL’s final hope, Jonathan Aranda, failed to go deep, handing the win and MVP honors to Schwarber.
“It was awesome,” Schwarber said. “The guys were really into it. They were yelling, screaming, cheering me on every swing.”
The NL’s victory marks just their second All-Star win since 2013, cutting into the AL’s all-time series lead of 48–45–2.
