What a game! The crowd inside the Batangas City Coliseum on Tuesday (November 12) was stunned after Jason Opiso made a clutch basket to seal the win for the Quezon Huskers over the Batangas City Tanduary Rum Masters in game 2 of the best-of-three South division finals, 65-64.
Quezon was down by eight in the last two minutes of regulation, 64-56, but a late scoring outburst, a 7-0 run, capped by an Opiso steal leading to a Louell Jay Gonzales layup put them just one point behind Batangas.
Opiso’s Heroics Force a Decisive Game 3 in South Division Finals
With just 10 seconds left in the game clock, the Huskers looked like they were about to be sent home after trailing to the Rum Masters, 64-63. After their final timeout, head coach Eric Gonzales drew up a final play for the team’s top scorer, Judel Ric Fuentes. However, Fuentes missed the crucial jump shot but fortunately, Opiso was there to clean the offensive boards for a game-winning tip-in, forcing a series-deciding game 3.
Gonzales played only 19 minutes in game 2 but was named the best player of the match after putting up 17 points and 7 rebounds. Despite his poor shooting performance, Fuentes gave 15 points, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds. The man of the hour, Jason Opiso, who made two important plays in the final minute, finished the game with 6 points and 12 rebounds.
After an impressive outing from two of their best players, Levi Hernandez and Juneric Baloria, Batangas could have booked a ticket to the MPBL National Finals. Hernandez made it rain after draining 4 triples and finished with 18 points while Baloria chipped in with 15 points.
The MPBL South Finals will return to Quezon on November 14 at the Lucena Convention Center. Meanwhile, the Pampanga Giant Lanterns are now waiting patiently before the Finals kick off on December 1 which will be held in Dubai, UAE.
