The Dallas Mavericks could turn things around and land a championship caliber player in the offseason to bolster their chances in the 2025-2026 NBA season.
Dallas Going All In Next Season
Earlier this year, the Mavericks pulled one of the most controversial trades in NBA history that might have altered, not only their franchise, but the whole league. The Luka-AD trade wasn’t received well by their fans, but the Mavs could potentially change the narrative this summer by adding another star to team up with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis.
In short, Dallas could make moves in the offseason to improve their roster and make the Mavericks a contender again while Kyrie and AD take their time to recover from injuries, especially that Irving had just tore his ACL in March. One such option is by trading for a veteran point guard and a former champion—Jrue Holiday.
The Mavericks’ front office is reportedly going to explore a possible trade that would sway Holiday away from the Boston Celtics, and send him to Texas. However, the idea of getting an excellent replacement for Kyrie and a key piece for the team’s championship hopes is still a long shot.
As of this moment, Jrue Holiday still has a 3-year, $104 million contract under his name, which is literally a financial puzzle for the Mavericks. Paying the 15-year veteran point guard his worth would be crucial for their salary cap next year considering they’re also hoping to add more pieces. In addition, the Mavs would have to sacrifice a lot of their talented young guys to at least entice the Boston Celtics to send one of their key players to the. That could be a package including Daniel Gafford or Dereck Lively II plus a few future first round picks. Lest we forget, AD and Holiday worked great back in New Orleans.
Moreover, the Celtics aren’t actively shopping Holiday, so he’s obviously not in the trading block just yet. At least for now. Although the two-time champion would be a great addition to the Mavericks, who are currently in need of a veteran presence on the back court with Kyrie Irving out, though they’re also looking at other names like Lonzo Ball and Chris Paul.
Another player that is rumored to be the Mavs’ next target is Kevin Durant.
KD at 36 years old is still one of the most lethal scorers in the league today. With his days in Phoenix seemingly about to end, Durant may end up taking his talents to Dallas. Last season, the former MVP averaged 26.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game but failed to deliver the Suns to the playoffs.
Durant’s next possible destination has been the talk of the town, and the Mavericks is obviously one of them. This would mean that he’s going to team up with an old buddy, Kyrie Irving, for the second time.
However, Jrue Holiday and Kevin Durant donning the blue and white jersey is still a huge uncertainty. What’s sure though is they’re going to have the rights for the first pick of the 2025 NBA draft, which is highly likely going to be Cooper Flagg.
To sum it all up, did Nico Harrison flip the script or did the league just give him a nice leverage to revive the Mavericks?
